I am Seema!

I am a Wellington-based mixed media artist originally from the Fiji Islands. I use various art mediums like acrylic, watercolour pencils, crayons, oil pastels, acrylic paints, and metallic pens to create my paintings. My artwork is inspired by the tikka (round dot on Indian woman’s forehead/third eye). Being a Geographer, I get inspiration from people and the settlements that they live in. I use colours to show emotions in my paintings – happiness, pensive sadness, delight and so on.

Currently I am working on a heritage project where I am showcasing a collection of paintings that tell stories of the Girmit Women of Fiji. To create these paintings I use traditional materials like turmeric, sindhoor, saree fabric, jute, and charcoal to create captivating artworks, often quite emotionally moving for the viewer. My collage works are of a messy nature, a reflection of my family’s fragmented history, which is extremely overwhelming to collate and understand. By telling their stories through my paintings, I give mana (respect) to my ancestors and to every indentured labourer that worked under the colonial rule in Fiji. I strongly believe that we, descendants, are the kaitiaki of the stories of the people before us.

I hope you enjoy the artworks. For any enquiries please contact me on expressionsbyseema@gmail.com
